Current Life Happenings
I’m moving out of my early/mid-twenties apartment.
It is mess finding, mess making, organizing and curating.
Similarly to how I work, I am taking my time to ideate. I’m carving out the space to be specific and intentional about what to bring with me.
It is divergent and convergent thinking wrapped together in old newspaper and taped up in boxes.
Most importantly, it is cathartic and emblematic of my creative process.
Visualizing My Headspace
I’ve always envisioned my mind to be a large circular room full of filing cabinets. When trying to remember something I’d visualize sorting through the isles of cabinets and then rummaging through the drawer until I found the file containing the information I wanted. Or, if I was taking a test I’d imagine flipping through the text book until I saw what I needed. I wouldn’t exactly consider this photographic memory, but it might just lend to me being a highly visual thinker.
Ebb & Flow
Marathon training forced me to adopt two principles; pacing and tapering. These two concepts were more challenging than I expected. There were crisp fall afternoons that I wanted to run 5 additional miles at a 30 sec faster pace but I knew that ultimately this would hinder me reaching my final goal. I’ve applied this to many projects outside of physical conditioning and they have proven their value. In my line of work these disciplines become strategic planning, working backwards from deadlines, and iterating. It is becoming comfortable with moving cyclically in order to reach the finish line in your best form.
Design Squiggle
The Newman Design Squiggle is a perfect visualization of my process. It portrays the process of divergent thinking in chaos to convergent thinking in finding clarity and focus. Where as many may anxiously rush towards untangling the knot I think the most magic happens in the chaos, the place where the possibilities are endless and the imagination can run wild.
